Nasya – Ayurvedic Nasal Therapy
Nasya, also known as Shirovirechana, is one of the powerful Panchakarma therapies in Ayurveda, involving the administration of medicated oil, ghee, herbal extracts, or powders into the nasal passages treating a range of ailments and eliminating excess Kapha (mucus) to restore balance. This treatment not only clears congestion and supports respiratory health but also has a deep-reaching effect on the sinuses, upper respirator tract, eyes, ears, throat, and even the brain base. Nasya can be performed both as a therapeutic treatment by an Ayurvedic practitioner and as a self-maintenance practice at home to maintain overall well-being.
By clearing excess mucus and toxins, Nasya enhances breathing, sharpens the senses, and promotes mental clarity. It is especially beneficial for conditions such as headaches, earaches, hay fever, sinusitis, eye disorders, tonsillitis, and tension in the jaw or head. Additionally, the soothing properties of medicated oils help to calm irritation, providing much-needed moisture to dry or inflamed nasal membranes.
What to Expect During a Nasya Treatment
A Nasya treatment begins with an invigorating herbal oil scalp and chest massage to stimulate circulation and relax the body. Next, the face is massaged with warm stones, and an aromatic facial steam is given to open the airways and loosen mucus. Warm towels are applied over the face to further encourage detoxification.
Once the body is primed, a moderate dose of Anu Thailam (herbal nasal drops) is administered into each nostril while you remain comfortably reclined. The oil flows into the nasal cavity, cleansing and dissolving congestion, and facilitating the elimination of accumulated toxins. You may need to blow your nose, spit, or cough as mucus and residue are expelled. If tolerated, a second round of oil application may be performed for a deeper cleansing effect.
Since Nasya is a deeply therapeutic treatment, first-time sessions may feel slightly unfamiliar or intense as the body begins the cleansing process. However, with regular treatments, the experience becomes more comfortable, and over time, less residue will be expelled as the nasal passages clear and strengthen.
