Contraindications - When you shouldn’t get a treatment

Standard contraindications apply to most body treatments and there are specific contraindications for some treatments. Please review the specific contraindications here. It is important that these contraindications are taken seriously to ensure you have the best experience possible and to ensure your safety and the safety of the therapist. If you have a unique illness or circumstance it is wise to talk with your primary physician about the appropriateness of receiving body treatments and if you have any concerns please communicate them with your therapist prior to your appointment. If you have any questions regarding contraindications please contact me via email or the enquiry form here.

Why is it recommended to avoid massage during menstruation?

Abhyanga massage and some other Ayurvedic treatments can stimulate detoxification processes in your body. Menstruation is a natural form of cleansing and it is recommended that women take extra rest during this time. Applying additional stimulation/cleansing may lead to a weakening effect on the body. Furthermore as you are massaged, moving from extremities toward your heart, energy/prana is redirected upward. During menstruation, there is more downward energy known as Apana vayu - to promote menstrual blood flow. You can see then, how body therapies during menstruation may counterproductively stimulate the flow of Prana. Additionally, as sensitivity cab increase during menstruation, body therapies during this time may be too stimulating. For a menstruation friendly treatment book the MiniVeda Ritual.

Can I get a massage if I am pregnant?

Yes you can! You may have read that massage is generally not advised during the first trimester. This is not so much related to contraindications but due to liability concerns, as the first trimester carries a naturally occurring increased risk of miscarriage. At Ayurveda Oasis we offer a 1 hour prenatal massage. You can choose from Ayurvedic herbal oils or cacao and shea butter blend for your massage. Our massage table is plush and adjustable and supportive of side-lying positing used in pregnancy massage. We also use plenty of pillows to provide extra comfort and posture support. As always, communication and feedback is encouraged to ensure the safety and comfort of mumma and bubba.
